The people of the Finney County Preservation Alliance are hard at work as always seeking funding for restoration of the historic Windsor Hotel.

I'd love to see it as an operating hotel with a lively restaurant, bar and coffee shop, with its historic value preserved.

What do you think should be done?

I agree with you!  It is such a shame that the Opera House which was similar architecturally is gone.  I learned a lot from attending the historic homes open house 2 SUndays ago.  One of the buildings open was the building that now houses the Western Ks. Comm. Foundation.  Shea SInclair gave the tour and it was exceedingly interesting!

That old building has so much vibrant history....if only walls could talk!

Why do they not put the Chamber, FCEDC, and Downtown Vision in the ground level? This would give them an income, obviously charging some sort of rent. Would that not be better than hoping for grant money, which is becoming more difficult to acquire?
I am sure there is work that would need to be done to accomplish this but at least they would be able to move forward with a plan.

Very sensible suggestion, Bucks.  I'd like to see that happen.  And why not?

Start redeveloping the structure from the ground up.  Recruit a few trendy chain stores (or better yet, maybe some locals could establish their own trendy shops) and help the old hotel become an area "hot spot".  It's happened time and again in other cities.  A beautifully designed and decorated coffee shop/wi-fi lounge would be a good starting point.  Then maybe a really good bistro or sandwich shop.  Then maybe an apparel establishment or two (that would appeal to the "trendy" set).  From there, re-do the hotel section and transform many of the rooms into appartments or lofts.

I know, I know.  I'm getting way ahead in the game.  There are fire codes to consider, parking space concerns, etc.  Not to mention a ton of money to refurbish and bring the structure up to modern code.  But it doesn't hurt to dream big, does it?

 Wink

I wish the Preservation Alliance the best of luck and I give them a bucket-full of encouragement.

Rooms to rent, long or short term, could solve the hotel vs. apartment dilemma. A nice restaurant, bar, meeting rooms, retail shops all would be welcome.

People love weddings and receptions in historic settings. They'd come into town from throughout the region for that opportunity.

It would be great if the Windsor could one day give people in GC and beyond more reasons to head downtown.

I say small steps at a time are the way to go. Make it at least partially pay for its own renovation. I am sure there are many people that would say lets get the millions needed to do it up right, but that process has not gotten off the ground.
I do fear the longer it sets empty the more likely it will be that it will see the demolition ball.
