I am sure you have seen all of the work that is being done on the south end of Main street. The widening of the street was just the beginning. Extremely wide stretches of cement I assume for bike riders, skate boarders, and joggers run to and fro! If that was not enough then we decide to build hills and plant shrubs, flowers, and trees! Oh this is going to look so nice next summer!
I am wondering however where did all of that money come from? I would like to know what the cost of this beautification is? Is this an Obama stimulus project hard at work? While all of this craziness is going on there actually are streets that need repair! Mary Street is like a cow path. Taylor has grooves so deep you had better have a crash helmet on your head when you try to cross or turn on to that street!
Don't worry though, those camels at the zoo will have a great view of flowers, shrubs, and trees!!
CRAZY!!

Let's not forget about all of the cement that was laid also! That is keeping more people stimulated!! I wonder how many hundreds of thousands dollars have been spent so the camels will have a good view. Also have you noticed all of the people walking on that new cement?Huh?? Crowds, I mean, well I guess I haven't really seen anybody yet........But I am sure they will come!

Yeah, it's nice to know that the City is working to improve the appearance in the Zoo area and along south Main.  Kudos to them and I like what I see.

Some of the streets are in bad shape, as Dog Lady said.  Hopefully, those areas along Taylor (and especially Mary Street east of Fleming) will be redone in 2010.  What about the atrocious intersections of Fleming/Harding and Fleming/Spruce?  Ouch!  I've seen so many wrecks at both locations that I can't count them on all of my fingers and toes.  With luck, they'll get traffic lights at both soon.

I think more should be done to keep the people shopping in our stores, keeping them in town, and bringing something to town that could occupy our wayward youth who insist that spraypainting and tearing up abandoned trailers is all the fun they have.

Planting and concreting Main St. does nothing to rectify those things.  We have bigger problems in our community right now.

Problems with destroying or defacing property is a very serious problem without a doubt, whether you are talking in Garden City or anywhere else in the nation. That however, does not change the fact, the idea of making our community more appealing to the eye as you arrive into town is a good idea.
My whole point of this posting is why, why do we have to go so over board? Spending that kind of money is just extravagant and beyond my understanding.

Yea, not gonna happen unless they start staying open later. I would do tons more shopping downtown if they didn't close at 5:00pm. Many people don't get off work until 5:00-6:00pm, these are the people with the jobs and money to spend. They go home, eat supper ect ... then go shopping. Main street is pretty much closed by then so the money goes to the box stores.

And you point your finger
But there's no one around

Just want one thing
Just to play the king
But the castle's crumbled
And you're left with just a name

So true, King.  I think the only store that doesn't have "bankers hours" is Stage.  I don't generally get off work until 6, so downtown shopping isn't an option for me.  Sad, because I'd like to buy from locally-owned merchants, if given the chance.

Oh well, off to the big box stores...

Hey! Maybe they are going to beautify all the entrances to the city!!!!
Well maybe that wouldn't be such a great idea. The rate they are spending money on beautification, I know we can not afford that!! It almost makes you think somebody has a direct line to the federal government "money give away" program!

Oh positively! However... I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say it is my belief that we really are smack in the bible belt; and our town has held fast to the stigma that true down home towns are pretty, quiet, and everyone goes to bed by 9pm. Or... at least we really look like it.
