Here's your chance to weigh in on tobacco control here in Finney County. The Health Coalition is running a survey through the end of this week.

It's less than 10 questions and will take you about 2 minutes. Go take the survey here.

Question #1 is vague at best.

Question #3 allows "fence sitters", answers should be formed like question #1.

Question #4 is vague - define "work area".

Questions #5-9 need their answers like question #1.

I still find it wrong that the city can tell a private business owner that a legal activity can not occur in their buisness. They should have just been made to post signage that the business is a smoking establishment and let the public vote with their dollars.

But in this nanny day and age what do you expect.

Agreed, King.

In 1980, Devo nailed it with the lyrics:

"Freedom of choice, is what you've got
Freedom from choice, is what you want..."

In 2010, the lyric needs to be revised to:

"Freedom of choice, is what you want
Freedom from choice, is what you've got"

Untenable ordinance, indeed.

By the way, and as I've stated before, I'm a non-smoker.

@Lou - Wow, a Devo reference. I used to listen to them all the time.

Gotta go hunting in the iTunes store now...

Likewise, Karl… Devo fan here.

They were all about silly fun, yet the songs contained poignant lyrics (…and what about that concept?!).

Those were the days… back when life was simpler.  All we need are a few of those beehive hats to make things right again, I think.

That pretty much sums it up!

Non-smoker here too, and this is a slippery slope we have all gone down.

Atleast it looks like some in Wichita have the stones to challenge the state ban.

Slippery slope! I do not think so! Only the addicted should feel it is acceptable to smoke and not hurt anybody while doing it. It is beyond me that raising tobacco is even allowed in the United States. Smoking is a terrible habit that needs to be stopped. Why the State of Kansas still feels it is allowable to smoke in the casinos is just wrong also.

Bucks, with all due respect, I think you’ve indicated in the past that you’re a former smoker (correct me if I’m wrong).  And it’s common knowledge that ex-smokers are the most venomous when it comes to anti-smoking laws.  But what’s at stake here is not a smoking-law issue and I think that King would agree with me (and he’s indicated that he’s a non-smoker too).  What he and I are concerned about is something far greater than smoking laws… it’s the shipping-away, slipping-away, chipping-away and outright giving-away of our civil liberties.  To allow someone, whether it’s on a city council or commission, or the state level (in desperate hope to appear “trendy” or “progressive”) to make that decision is DANGEROUS ground, hence the “slippery slope” analogy.

I don’t give a damn about the smoking laws, whether state or local (I don’t smoke, remember?).  What I give a damn about is our collective liberties, and you’d better give a damn too.  You allow some dip-stick to make your decisions for you while you passively stand-by, then you’re in deep trouble.  Put that decision in the hands of the people.  Don’t be a lamb.  Put it to a vote by the people.  And fight for your rights as if your life depended on it… because it does.

Take me back to the old days when the Commissioners listened to the citizens and had the intestinal fortitude to back-up their decisions with common sense.  The current local and State anti-smoking laws?  Stalin would have loved them; someone, somewhere made the decision for you and, by golly, you’ll abide by it whether you like it not.  My suggestion?  Vote-out all and any candidates that are in office, particularly at the local level.  Sweep ‘em out and send ‘em home without a thank you for the time they wasted for you and me.  To voters: grow a pair and take back your life and liberties.  “Give me liberty or give me death!” – Patrick Henry, March 23, 1775:

http://www.law.ou.edu/ushistory/henry.shtml

Be an American, do the right thing.  Fight to retain your liberties before they disappear forever, because they're going fast...

Yes,slippery slope.

You, as all Kansans have, have lost a piece of your freewill. The state has now made the choice that businesspersons can not allow a leagal activity to take place in their business.

Following the same lines, the state sold your freedom to choose to wear a seatbelt or not for $11 million dollars. Is it a good idea to wear seatbelts - yes, do I like the feel of the governments thumb on my back - no.

Look people, it's really simple. If XYZ business is a smoking establishment and I don't like it then I will take my dollars elsewhere, not cry and whine about it like many of you do. That is called freedom and you are slowly giving it away.

Go up to a Vet that fought for yours and my freedoms. Shake his hand and say "Thank you", then in the same breath, kick them in the junk and say "But sorry, you can not smoke in your own private club."

My position continues to be the same. Smoking is bad for you whether you are the smoker or you are inhaling it second hand.
You guys talk about freedom to make your own decisions. That same logic goes towards speed limits, or any other law. Your logic is so far from my own that I do not think we can even debate this.
Oh, did I not tell you I am also one of those vets you were talking about? Yes I did fight for your freedoms. I also fought for my own, which just happens to be to live in a smoke free environment.

I never said it wasn't bad for you or others, that is not in question here.

You guys talk about freedom to make your own decisions. That same logic goes towards speed limits, or any other law.
I decide to open a legitimate business selling XYZs, I allow smoking in MY business. Who has a gun to your head making YOU come in MY business and buy my product? There is a store a block down selling the same exact thing that is non-smoking. YOU decided what you want to do, not let the nanny state TELL you what to do.

Your logic is so far from my own that I do not think we can even debate this.
Looks that way.

Oh, did I not tell you I am also one of those vets you were talking about? Yes I did fight for your freedoms. I also fought for my own, which just happens to be to live in a smoke free environment.
Thanks for your service and the freedom to say the things I want to.

The reason for the ban is smoking is bad for you. All of the rest of the slippery slope comments are nothing to do with this issue.

Wow, can't argue with that logic. *rollseyes*

Lou's done with posting on "hot-button" issues.  I kind of like those whimsical threads that don't allow much room for passion or emotion.  Sometimes, I get too wrapped-up in political topics or something that I feel strongly about, then I say something that might offend someone.  Didn't mean to make it seem like I was lashing out, Bucks, certainly not at you.  Just stepped onto the soapbox, for a brief moment, and it was an ill fit.  'Scuze me, but could you pass the crow to my end of the table?

Like King said, thanks for your service.  I think it's important to convey our thanks to those who have served (or are serving) our country.  It simply cannot be said enough... or too much.

Now...

Anyone have a fluffy, soft or warm'n'fuzzy topic to discuss...?

Lou, you can find "fluffy, warm and soft" by checking out the Pet of the week video over on SWKPets.com

And you should continue to express your opinion. Isn't that one of the freedoms you cherish?

Like you said, if you don't let your voice be heard then other people will make decisions for you. Whether you like it or not.

On the forum, and in person, we just have to agree to disagree.
